Ireland has a modern financial system and banking is simple and convenient. Banks in Ireland generally open around 10.00am and close about 4.00pm Monday through Friday; 5pm on Thursday. Selected banks may open on Saturday mornings. Banking costs vary, however, many banks offer special student rates or even 'free banking' so it is well worth shopping around before opening an account.

Students should open a bank account as soon as possible after arrival.

How do I open a bank account?

In order to open a bank account you will need your passport/driver’s licence/national ID card, proof of home address by means of a bank statement or utility bill. Proof of your Irish address is required to comply with international money laundering legislation.  Therefore, it is not possible to open a bank account from overseas.  You are unlikely to have proof of address in the form of a utility bill, on arrival.

Credit cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely used, while American Express and Diners cards may not always be accepted.
