Banking in Ireland

Open a local bank account

Opening a local bank account is one of the first things international students should do after arriving in Ireland. It helps you:

  • Manage daily expenses like rent, groceries, and transport
  • Receive money from home
  • Pay tuition fees
  • Avoid international transaction fees

What You'll Need to Open a Bank Account

To open a student bank account in Ireland, you will need the following documents

  1.  Valid Passport or national ID
  2. Proof of Irish Address – This can be a utility bill, tenancy agreement, or a university-issued letter of  attendance
  3. Proof of Student Status – Usually a letter from your university confirming your enrolment
  4. Visa or Immigration Documents – If applicable
  5. Irish/UK Mobile Number – Required for online applications with some banks

Once your documents are in order, the next step is to make an appointment at your bank of choice. Call your local bank or walk in to arrange a time. On the day of your appointment, the bank clerk will walk you through the options and review your paperwork. If all your documents are in order, you should get an account number and sort code so you can make your first deposit. Your debit card will come by post and, in most cases, your PIN number will follow separately. You will receive additional instructions on how to set up online banking.
