The Irish Education System

The Irish Education System

Ireland’s education system is known for its high quality and strong emphasis on academic excellence, creativity, and inclusivity.

It’s divided into several levels:

Primary Education (Ages 4–12)

  • Junior Infants to 6th Class
  • Children typically start school at age 4 or 5

Senior Cycle (2–3 years)

  • Covers ages 12–18.
  • Students choose between different programmes:
    • Leaving Certificate (Established) – Most common, academic focus.
    • Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) – Combines academic and practical subjects.
    • Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) – More practical and work-oriented.
  • Ends with the Leaving Certificate exams, which are crucial for university entry.

Higher Education

Ireland has a mix of universities, technological universities, institutes of technology and private higher education institutions. These offer:

  • Undergraduate Degrees (usually 3–4 years)
  • Postgraduate Degrees (Master’s, PhD)
  • Diplomas and Certificates

Irish degrees are widely recognised internationally for enrolment in postgraduate programmes at universities around the world.

Entry Requirements for International Students:

  • Based on your home country’s qualifications.
  • English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS or TOEFL) is usually required.
  • Some courses may require portfolios, interviews, or specific subjects.

Academic Calendar

  • School year: September to June.
  • University year: Typically September to May, with exams in December and May.

Language of Instruction

  • English is the main language.
  • Irish is taught in schools but not required for international students.
