It’s divided into several levels:
Primary Education (Ages 4–12)
- Junior Infants to 6th Class
- Children typically start school at age 4 or 5
Senior Cycle (2–3 years)
- Covers ages 12–18.
- Students choose between different programmes:
- Leaving Certificate (Established) – Most common, academic focus.
- Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) – Combines academic and practical subjects.
- Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) – More practical and work-oriented.
- Ends with the Leaving Certificate exams, which are crucial for university entry.
Higher Education
Ireland has a mix of universities, technological universities, institutes of technology and private higher education institutions. These offer:
- Undergraduate Degrees (usually 3–4 years)
- Postgraduate Degrees (Master’s, PhD)
- Diplomas and Certificates
Irish degrees are widely recognised internationally for enrolment in postgraduate programmes at universities around the world.
Entry Requirements for International Students:
- Based on your home country’s qualifications.
- English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS or TOEFL) is usually required.
- Some courses may require portfolios, interviews, or specific subjects.
Academic Calendar
- School year: September to June.
- University year: Typically September to May, with exams in December and May.
Language of Instruction
- English is the main language.
- Irish is taught in schools but not required for international students.
