Ireland's framework of qualifications

Ireland’s Framework of Qualifications

Ireland’s education and training system is underpinned by the NFQ, which systematically classifies qualifications by level, award type, and purpose—from Level 1 literacy to Level 10 doctoral degrees.

Every qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) is backed by a quality assurance process that is internationally respected and recognised.

The NFQ

  • has 10 levels
  • shows how general education, further education and training, and higher education awards are mapped against the 10 levels of the framework.
  • describes what learners need to know, understand and be able to do to achieve a qualification. It lists the main qualifications awarded at each level and pathways from one NFQ level to the next.
  • Facilitates the comparison of qualifications
