Courses:

Bachelor of Business Studies in International Hotel Management

The Bachelor of Business Studies in International Hotel Management (BBS) is a unique degree which provides a balance of academic education with practical training and internships. The BBS degree is awarded by the National University of Ireland and is a four year degree including a full 12 months (Year 2) of paid professional placement. The course ends with a nine month trainee management internship which takes place after Year 4 exams. The strong professional experience of Shannon College students ensures that Shannon College graduates are much sought after in the international hotel industry.

Year 1

Year 1 provides students with a foundation in professional practice. Practical classes are taken four days a week and cover culinary, restaurant, food science, accommodation and IT skills. Year 1 also introduces students to the key business subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Management and Business Communication.

Year 2

The practical training in Year 1 is reinforced in Year 2 when students undertake a 12 month operative placement in a top hotel in Ireland. The placement is arranged and supervised by the college and involves the student rotating among different departments. Students are paid by their employer during this year.

Year 3

Year 3 is spent studying in Shannon College. The emphasis shifts away from practical and operational training to more theoretical and managerial subjects such as Food and Beverage Studies, Hospitality and Business Law, Accommodation Management and Front Office Management. The business subjects of Accounting, Economics, Research Methods and Marketing are also taken in Year 3.

Year 4

The emphasis in Year 4 is on the strategic aspect of hotel management. In addition to the traditional business subjects, topics such as Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management prepare students to be not just hotel managers, but general business managers. Year 4 students also undertake a significant piece of research in their thesis/business development project.

End of Year 4

After the Year 4 exams, students begin a nine month trainee management internship in a worldwide location. Global hotel companies such as Jumeirah International, Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton and many other visit Shannon College to recruit students onto management development programmes. This internship is compulsory up to graduation (nine months) but in most cases, students continue to work in their hotel after graduation.

Certificate in English Language Studies (CELS):

The Certificate in English Language Studies caters specifically for the English language needs of students who intend to enrol on the Bachelor of Buisness Studies in International Hotel Management degree course in the College. It is ideally suited to students who have attained the minimum academic requirements for the degre course in Shannon or their chosen universities but need to improve their spoken and written English.
