Founded in 1784 by Royal Charter granted by King George III of Great Britain and Ireland, the College was established to educate surgeons at a time when surgeons were trained separately from physicians. In 1886, the undergraduate training of surgeons and physicians was merged and the College established a Medical School.The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland is situated in the heart of Dublin, which is Ireland's largest city, with over one million inhabitants. It is one of Europe's finest capital cities, with a superb coastal location enhanced by some of the world's most beautiful eighteenth-century architecture. Dublin is an enchanting Georgian city and a thriving commercial and social centre, where old and new building styles and attitudes to life mix happily together.

 

Academic Information

The College is a recognised college of the National University of Ireland and medical graduates receive the MB, BCh and BAO degrees from the National University, as well as the historical qualifications LRCP & SI (Licentiates of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland).Our pharmacy graduates receive the honours degree B. Sc (Pharmacy) and professional recognition by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.Physiotherapy graduates are awarded the honours degree of B.Sc. (Physiotherapy) and professional recognition by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery provides postgraduate nursing programmes including certificates, degrees and higher diplomas, approved through the National University of Ireland and An Bord Altranais.Post-graduate nursing research supervision at Masters and PhD level is also provided.

Facilities

The RCSI building dates from 1810 and is one of Dublin's best known historical landmarks. There is nothing traditional, however, about the

resources, facilities and staffing of the College. Behind the elegant historical facade are modern, purpose-built facilities, with an adjoining medical library and on campus accommodation.

International Students


The College has always had an international dimension. Our international students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures and do much to enhance and enrich life at the College. Over 50 different countries are represented in our student population of fifteen hundred.


Students return home after graduation with qualifications and skills that are held in high international regard. In addition to the undergraduate medical, pharmacy and physiotherapy courses, the College provides a range of courses and examinations at postgraduate level catering for all the major specialities in surgery as well as anaesthesia, radiology, dentistry and nursing. The Student Services department is responsible for all non academic student support services. As a student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland you will be part of an organisation which is at the heart of medical science.
